Transmission Service Total Fluid Change
Transmission repairs can be very expensive. But with proper service expensive repairs are avoidable.
Look, vehicle transmissions are tough and durable. All you have to do to maintain them is replace the fluid on schedule. The biggest enemy to your fluid is heat. Excessive heat can be caused by several things. Getting stuck in the snow and rocking back and forth can cause a lot of heat, very quickly. Pulling a trailer or any other heavy loads can also cause the fluid to overheat. When this happens the fluid gets contaminated with bits of clutch plates and metal. Dirty transmission fluid under pressure acts like liquid sandpaper, eating away at important gaskets and seals. When that happens things start to go wrong fairly quickly.
Your vehicle owner’s manual will have the recommended service schedule suggesting when to change the fluid. Just keep in mind that you only have to overheat the fluid once, for things to start going wrong. We can tell a lot just by looking at the fluid. It is fairly easy to see if it looks discolored or smells burnt. At that point, the quicker you replace it with fresh fluid, the less chance you will have of having a major breakdown.
